Is Jaw Pain Making Everyday Life Uncomfortable?
Do you wake up with a tight or aching jaw? Perhaps your jaw clicks when you eat, you regularly experience headaches around your temples, or you notice yourself clenching your teeth when you’re stressed.
These can all be signs of a problem affecting the temporomandibular joint—usually known as the TMJ.
Jaw pain can be frustrating and uncomfortable, especially when it starts affecting eating, talking, yawning or sleeping. Bowen Therapy offers a gentle, relaxing approach that may help ease some of the muscular tension connected with TMJ discomfort.
What is the TMJ?
Your temporomandibular joints are located just in front of your ears. They connect your lower jaw to your skull and allow you to open and close your mouth.
When the joints or surrounding muscles become irritated or tense, you may experience:
Aching or tenderness around your jaw
Clicking or popping when opening your mouth
Headaches around your temples
Earache without an obvious ear infection
Tight facial muscles
Pain when chewing or yawning
Tension through your neck and shoulders
Difficulty opening your mouth fully
A jaw that sometimes feels stiff or locked
Why does jaw pain happen?
There isn’t always one clear reason. Your symptoms could be connected to:
Clenching or grinding your teeth
Stress or anxiety
Tight muscles in your face, neck and shoulders
Poor posture
An injury to your jaw
Arthritis affecting the joint
Chewing gum or biting your nails
A dental issue
Many people clench their jaw without realising it, particularly while concentrating, driving, working or feeling stressed. Over time, this can leave the muscles around the jaw feeling tired, sore and tense.
Could Bowen Therapy help?
Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment using small, carefully placed movements over the muscles and connective tissue.
During a session, I may work around your jaw, neck, shoulders and upper back. This is because tension in these areas can sometimes contribute to the discomfort you feel around your jaw.
There are short breaks between the Bowen movements, giving your body time to relax and respond. Many clients find the treatment deeply calming—something that can be especially helpful if stress is contributing to jaw clenching.
Bowen Therapy may help to:
Ease muscular tension around the jaw and face
Relax tight neck and shoulder muscles
Encourage more comfortable movement
Make you more aware of when you are clenching your jaw
Support relaxation and better-quality sleep
Reduce your overall feelings of stress and tension
Everyone is different, so results cannot be guaranteed. Bowen Therapy is a complementary treatment and should be used alongside—not instead of—any advice from your dentist or GP.
What happens at an appointment?
We’ll begin with a relaxed chat about your symptoms, general health and any treatment or dental care you are already receiving.
You’ll remain clothed during the treatment. The Bowen movements are light and gentle, and nothing is forced. Your session will always be adapted to suit you and your comfort level.
A few simple ways to help your jaw
You can also try making a few small changes at home:
Keep your teeth slightly apart when you’re not eating
Avoid chewing gum or biting pens and nails
Choose softer foods when your jaw is particularly painful
Try not to open your mouth too widely when yawning
Check whether you’re clenching your jaw when feeling stressed
Relax your shoulders and pay attention to your posture
If you think you may be grinding your teeth at night, it’s worth speaking to your dentist.
